Poker Hand Rankings

The Texas Hold‘em Poker Hand Rankings are based on the probability of being randomly dealt such a poker hand from a shuffled 52 card deck.

In Texas Hold‘em you can use any five of the seven available cards (two hole cards plus five community cards) to make your hand. Let’s get started with the possible poker hands and how they rank from strongest to weakest ...



1. ROYAL FLUSH

hand rankings - royal flushThere is no better hand in Texas Hold‘em! A Royal Flush is a poker hand which contains five cards of the same suit in sequence, Ten to Ace.



2. STRAIGHT FLUSH

 hand rankings - straight flushA Straight Flush is a hand containing five cards of the same suit in sequence.



3. FOUR OF A KIND

four of a kindA Four of a Kind or quads is a poker hand which contains four cards of one rank and one unmatched card of another rank.



4. FULL HOUSE

5. FLUSH

poker hand rankings - flushA Flush is a hand which contains five cards of the same suit but not in ranking order. The example shows an Ace-high Flush



6. STRAIGHT

straightA poker hand which contains five cards of sequential rank in more than one suit



7. THREE OF A KIND

poker hand rankings - three of a kindThree of a kind or trips is a poker which comprises two cards of the same rank, plus two unmatched cards. If you were dealt 4 4 in our example, we’d call it a set, making a three of a kind while holding your pocket pair.



8. TWO PAIR

poker hand rankings - two pairA poker hand which contains two cards of the same rank, plus two cards of another rank, plus one unmatched card.



9. ONE PAIR

hand rankings - one pairOne pair is a poker hand which contains two cards of the same rank, plus three other unmatched cards. If two hands have the same pair, the non-paired hands also known as kickers are compared in descending order to decide the winner.



10. HIGH CARD

hand rankings - high cardIf a poker hand contains non of the above mentioned combinations, it is valued by the highest card. It’s important to know that approximately 50% of the time you will end up with a high card, also known as no-pair hand.
